YAG CAPSULOTOMY

This is normally detected during a routine comprehensive eye examination.

You may have noticed your vision has gone a bit cloudy.

YAG capsulotomy is a type of  laser eye surgery that’s used to treat a specific complication after cataract surgery.

This post cataract surgery problem can be caused by scar tissue forming behind a lens implant after cataract surgery.

The complication may occur a few weeks after cataract surgery, but also could take years before it appears.

This growth can make your vision fuzzy.

This happens when a membrane in your eye, called the posterior capsule, becomes cloudy. This is sometimes called a “secondary cataract.”

DO I NEED TO GO BACK INTO THE OPERATING THEATRE?

No you don’t , this procedure is a simple “ sit down “ procedure in the Treatment Room at VE Medical , Orange Grove.

YAG laser surgery is a non-invasive outpatient procedure. You normally don’t experience any pain during this procedure. The simple process required in YAG eye surgery includes:

  • Your VE Medical, anesthesiologist, puts anesthetic eye drops in the eye being treated
  • Eye drops to dilate your pupils also are administered.
  • Your ophthalmology doctor points the YAG laser at the back of your eye to create an opening in the clouded lining of the lens capsule.

The hole that’s cut by the laser allows light to pass through the membrane so it can reach your retina. Once the procedure is done, you may need to wait for one or two hours before going home.

You will sit and be able to relax with a “cup of tea”.

The professional staff at VE Medical will monitor the intraocular pressure of your eye to ensure that your vision problems are corrected properly.

  • You may get prescribed antibiotic or anti-inflammatory eye drops for about a week
  • With a successful procedure, your sight will improve in about 24 hours.

Healing from YAG eye surgery is a straightforward process, but you will need someone to drive you home after surgery. There is essentially no downtime following this surgery. You may see Floaters in your vision, but these should clear in the coming weeks.
